The pizzas are meals that consist of a baked pasta that is seasoned with tomato sauce, cheese and a wide range of meats and vegetables. Although the dish originated in Greece, pizza quickly spread to other cultures and is currently one of the most popular foods in the world. In America, depending on the region in which you are, you can find different types of pizza. For generations, New Yorkers and Chicans are at war to know who the best pizza is. However, for Canadians, the Panzerotto Pizza family is the clear favorite. And after studying the history of Pizza Panzerotto restaurants, it’s easy to see why this small franchise is so popular.
Panzerotto style pizza is sometimes referred to as a smaller and larger calzone. Cheese and tomatoes with mozzarella are the most popular ingredients, but the dishes can be stuffed with peppers, onions and other products. The dish was born in Italy in the 40s, but has become extremely popular in several Canadian cities.
The chain started at the end of 1976 with only one branch in downtown Toronto. The small plant, located at 501 Yonge St., was owned and managed by a chef named Alex Schiavone. Alex’s culinary experience began in the early 50s when he worked as a gourmet chef.
In 1969, he opened a small Italian restaurant in Ontario and spent the following years honing his skills. It was during this time that Alex started offering Panzerotto style pizzas to his customers. Panzerotto’s recipe is a typical calzone type of a small village in Italy.
The new dish quickly became an instant hit with Ontario customers and they began to request pizza in large quantities. In fact, it was so popular that Mr. Schiavone decided to sell his Italian restaurant and open one that mainly sold the new dish in Toronto.
Sales of Panzerotto dishes were initially very slow due to the fact that the pizza style was virtually unknown at the time. But in the end, his supporters were able to spread the news of the tasty new surprise and conquer his detractors. In the early 1980s, Alex Schiavone decided to take advantage of the new success of his company. He attracted numerous investors and expanded his company through franchise opportunities.
Since then the company Panzerotto Pizza has gone strong and Alex and his family have been very involved in its operations. There are currently thirty-five Panzerottos operating in Canada and in the northern United States. Alex and his sons Frank, Joe and Vito have over seventy-five years of combined experience and are an integral part of daily operations both at headquarters and at various stores.
Since April 1995, the company has been the first to provide pizza delivery throughout the city via the internet. Interested users could visit the restaurant’s website and order their favorite dishes. Through the use of an extremely modern and highly technological technology at the time, the orders were directly addressed to the call centers and then handled for delivery. The beloved chain of pizzerias, not happy to stop there, is still evaluating and constantly improving its customer service skills.
